Prerequisite: Students must have an A average in Academic English I or an A/B average in Honors English 9.

Honors English 10 is a course offered to college-bound students in their sophomore year. This course continues the critical analysis of literature by combining reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. It will further prepare students for higher level English courses. It emphasizes the development of ideas in class discussion, writing, and formal speaking opportunities. Students will read texts from various genres including poetry, novels, non-fiction, and drama. Students will use skills necessary for reading complex texts by focusing on language mechanics, extensive vocabulary development, and reading strategies. They will also learn how to properly use MLA format in a research paper and write numerous essays throughout the school year. Summer reading of two novels is also STRONGLY suggested and will be assessed within the first few weeks of the school year. It is highly recommended that students complete the assigned course readings prior to the beginning of the school year as these materials are vital to the course and will not only be referred to but also be assessed as part of the course requirement. Books will be assessed on common literary elements such as theme, characterization, plot etc.
